We aim to make our events as accessible as possible to everyone who would like to attend. Here is some information about what we can do to help you come to a Manchester Girl Geeks event:
Disabled access to the venue
We often hold the events on the top floor (2nd floor) at MadLab, which is not accessible (no lift in the building). If that would prevent you from coming to the event, please do not hesitate to get in touch – we can always swap to hold our event on the ground floor. (Why aren’t we on the ground floor by default you’re asking? It’s a little quieter and warmer upstairs! The ground floor at MadLab is fully accessible and has wheelchair-friendly toilets.
If we hold events at other venues, please email us or contact the venue directly to find out about accessibility.
If you need special transport arrangements to get to the venue, please let us know. We’ve got a small budget that allows us to contribute up to £10 to your travel costs (e.g. taxis etc.) per event (on a first come, first serve basis). We can only refund the money, however, if you arrange this with us before the event and keep the receipts.
Children & Babysitting
We try to make our events as child-friendly as possible. At the Girl Geek Tea Parties (Sunday afternoons), there is strictly no alcohol served and we provide tea, biscuits and cordial for younger guests. Depending on the topic, the workshop might be suitable even for younger children, and we have had guests as young as 5 – just drop us an email and we can provide you with some more information. Some of the ladies in our team are official STEM Ambassadors and have therefore had a CRB check as well, if there are any concerns.
- There are no baby changing facilities at the MadLab.
- There are work benches with tools, wires, etc. at MadLab, and fairly high staircases – children should not be left unattended.
- Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
If you need to arrange a babysitter in order to be able to attend the event, we can also contribute to child care costs for up to £10 per event (on a first come, first serve basis). Please let us know before the event.
I’m a guy, but I really want to attend!
Yes, the Girl Geek events are aimed at girls and women – but that doesn’t mean we want to be exclusive. In fact, at every event we have a guys who are enjoying the geeky talks and workshops just as much as we do. Men are more than welcome to attend, given they come with a girl geek, to make sure we keep the balance and give girls and women the space and attention they deserve – bring your partner, colleague, friend, sister, mother, auntie, daughter, house mate… they don’t have to be geeky, but simply interested in learning something new!
The event is sold out / I don’t have PayPal
We always have some spare places due to no-shows, but to make sure we don’t oversell the events, we usually limit the number of tickets. If the event is sold out but you would like a ticket, just get in touch and we can sort something. We’re quite flexible, y’know
If you can’t buy a ticket because you don’t have a PayPal account, simply drop us an email, we’ll sign you up and you can pay on the door. The £2 booking fee is to prevent said no-shows (PayPal and Eventbrite cheekily charge us fairly high fees and leave us with £1.30 per ticket, so we don’t really make any profit), which helps us to estimate how many people we can expect for the workshop.
You want to come to a Girl Geek Dinner or Girl Geek Tea Party, but there’s something stopping you? Just get in touch and we’ll try our best to make it happen! Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
