Upcoming Event: Girl Geeks in Residence @ BarCamp Mediacity

We’re very excited to announce our participation in the BarCamp MediaCity on 17th/18th September 2011. The weekend-long un-conference will be happening at the brand new BBC offices in MediaCity / Salford Quays, only a short tram ride away from Manchester city centre.

What is a barcamp?

A barcamp is a highly interactive ‘un-conference’, similar to a large show&tell event: attendees who want to present a 15-20 minute talk on their favourite geeky topic simply put the topic of their talk in a time slot on a big board (which can range from neat to bright to “whatever”). The sessions run all day and cover everything from technical (such as intros to programming on new platforms, demos of applications, discussions) to generally geeky (‘my favourite font’, why motorbikes are awesome’, ‘how to make the perfect curry’…). Some speakers spend days preparing the perfect powerpoint slides, while many others simply whip out their favourite gadget and talk about why they love it so much – everything goes! To make it even more exciting, some barcamps put the ‘camp’ in barcamp by offering people to stay overnight: think late night games of werewolf and powerpoint karaoke.

Why should I attend?

Easy: it’s a great, fun experience. You’ll get to meet people who are interested in geeky topics, have exciting conversations, watch some inspiring talks, learn some new skills, get to practice your presentation skills if you choose to give a talk and, last but not least, get plenty of free food and drinks (always a winner!)

What are the Manchester Girl Geeks doing there?

In order to make Barcamp MediaCity UK accessible and welcoming for women and first-time barcampers, a team from Manchester Girl Geeks will be on site all weekend to answer any questions you might have before, during, or after the event. Whether you are wondering about giving a talk at the conference, need more information about sleeping arrangements, want to know how to get home safely, or just have general questions or issues, the ‘Girl Geeks in Residence’ will be there to help!
